House Of The Spirits

This film is set in South America in the 1930s. Nivea (Vanessa Redgrave) and Severo (Armin Muehler-Stahl) have two girls, Rosa and Clara. Esteban (Jeremy Irons) is a poor man who loves Rosa but must make himself wealthy before he marries her. Rosa dies drinking wine that was poisoned. Esteban becomes a landowner who treats his servants badly and has an illegitimate son. Esteban’s sister, Ferla (Glenn Close), cares for their mother until she dies and Esteban comes back. He sees Clara (Meryl Streep), who has been in love with him for years. They have a daughter, Blanca, who is sent away for getting too close to an Indian. Blanca (Winona Ryder) returns years later to her beloved Pedro (Antonio Banderas). Esteban hates Pedro for unionizing and drives him away along with Ferla. Clara takes Blanca and leaves him. As a senator, Esteban is overthrown by liberals and the military takes over. Blanca finds out that Pedro is still alive.
